Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts for papers and design and planning projects should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief, Andrew D. Seidel, via email at [email protected]. Nearly all scholarly journals are now accepting manuscripts only by electronic means. However, if you absolutely cannot do this, please send us a brief fax at +1-406-794-0216 with your contact information, and we shall do our best to accommodate you. Please refer to the Manuscript Submission Checklist found here for complete instructions on submitting papers to JAPR.

ONLY original works neither published nor under review elsewhere will be considered.

PAPERS
Manuscripts: Papers should range from 2,000-6,000 words in length. All papers submitted must be created in a word-processing program (such as Microsoft Word), double spaced, and formatted to print on 8.5'' x 11'' (or A4) size paper. Save the file in .rtf or .doc format.

All papers should include on a first title page: (1) a brief title that is descriptive of the paper’s contents; (2) the name(s), position(s), professional or academic affiliation(s), and email address(es) of the author(s), as well as the full postal address for the corresponding author; and (3) a 45-character running title. The second page of the manuscript should include the paper’s title and an approximately 200-word abstract that emphasizes the paper’s contribution to the field and its practical architectural or planning implications.

It has been very useful for authors to review recent JAPR articles on similar subjects and include reference to those articles in the papers they submit. It is essential to point out how the new paper contributes to this stream of knowledge development because it indicates an understanding of the types of materials JAPR publishes as well as currency in the literature.

The body of the paper should include an introduction to the subject, background information, discussion of procedure, results, conclusions, implications for practice and advancement of research, references, an autobiographical sketch, and acknowledgments (optional). If funding for the research was received from
non-personal sources, the sources must be identified in the acknowledgments.

Style: With the exception of letters to the editor and position papers, all papers submitted should be written in the third person. In the interest of appealing to a broad and diverse audience, a clear style, free of jargon, is important.

References: References should be arranged in alphabetical order. In the text, they should be referred to by name and year; if the reference has more than two authors, the text citation should use the name of the first author followed by “, et al.” Papers by the same author(s) published in the same year should be distinguished by the use of lowercase letters following the date. References should contain the following in the order shown: names of all contributing authors (last name followed by first initial), date of publication, title of article, names of editors (edited books only), title of journal or book, volume and issue numbers (journals only), location and name of publishing company (books only), and inclusive pages (journals and articles in edited books only). Authors should review past JAPR issues for additional examples of various resources. Some basic examples follow:
Journal: Appleyard D (1970) Styles and methods of structuring a city. Environment and Behavior 2(3):
100-107.
Book: Lynch K (1960) The image of the city. Cambridge: MIT Press.
Article in an Edited Book: Redei A, Kelemen P (1969) The presence of platelets. In A Bertelli and JC Houck (Eds.), Inflammation biochemistry. Chicago: Locke, pp. 161-165.

Figures and Tables: Illustrations or photographs that illuminate the discussion in the text are encouraged. All artwork accepted for final publication must be in camera-ready black-and-white (halftones) or original line drawings. All photographs must be black-and-white glossy prints. All figures should be submitted as hard copies, one figure per page. Any artwork that is not a table will be considered a figure, so please label all artwork (e.g., matrices, maps) as figures in the order in which they appear in the text. All type must be large enough to still be readable when reduced to fit the journal page size (approximately 5.25'' x 8.25''). Please include all tables either in the original manuscript file or as separate Microsoft Word documents, ensuring they can be easily reproduced on the journal page size (approximately 5.25'' x 8.25'').

DESIGN AND PLANNING PROJECTS
Manuscripts: All documentation must be submitted via email to Andrew D. Seidel, Editor-in-Chief, at [email protected]. Both a description of the design or project and a summary of its contribution may be included in written, graphic, and/or photographic form. The objectives of the design, project, or evaluation, and the response to fulfilling those objectives, should be clear to the reader. All written materials accompanying these submissions should conform to the guidelines for papers shown above. Submissions will be juried based on not only the quality of the design solution and its contribution to the field but also on its specified use of systematically collected information in the design decision-making process. Authors of designs will receive an Award Certificate acknowledging their contribution to the field.

Proofs and Reprints: The corresponding author for both papers and design and planning projects will receive page proofs, which should be corrected and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be limited to printer’s errors; authors will be responsible for the cost of making extensive changes. Reprints may be ordered at the price listed on the order form accompanying the proofs.

Copyright: After a manuscript is received by the journal, the author(s) will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under U.S. copyright law.
